Critic Consensus: Book Club only intermittently rises to the level of its impressive veteran cast; fortunately, they're more than enough to bring pedestrian material entertainingly to life.

Hollywood could've done something different with the casting, we talk about inclusion and diversity but if there was a different way of casting, it wouldn't change the film at all but how we feel about it.

There's a great sense of camaraderie in it all but it could have been so much better with a script that rejected the obvious.

Yes, we desperately, as an audience, need this film. Just not, well, this one. Because it's rubbish.

June 1, 2018 | Rating: 1/5 | Full Review…

Except for one good, weirdly rogue joke about a Werner Herzog documentary, there's almost nothing to be said for this mouldy old script.

It's a film to remind you that the comedy confectionery of Nora Ephron or perhaps Nancy Meyers is not that easy to replicate, and you can be left with all of the guilt and none of the pleasure.

Could have been better. 4 books mentioned at the book group and three of them are the 50 shades of Grey trilogy. Borderline insulting, actually and such a cliche. The actresses are all good, but the storyline does them no favours.

While the material was thin at times, the veteran actresses make you care because how talented they are. THe story is slow but it's realistic and not too sugary sweet. Keaton, Fonda and Steenburgen have some fine moments but Bergen was the strongest in my mind and the men who supported them in Garcia, Johnson, Nelson and Dreyfus were just as strong. A nice rental but nothing much more! 08-15-2018
