It makes for a bleak view of humanity dressed up in tacky 70s clothes and some of the worst hairstyles ever committed to film. But if you're a fan of gangster movies and/or Depp, Black Mass is the best dose you're going to get this year.

Overall, Black Mass is an engaging, nail-biting thriller with [Johnny] Depp's best performance in years.

Johnny Depp clocks in for a remarkably terrifying and charmingly sinister performance in an indifferent entry to the gangster film genre: Black Mass.

While it may not get a top grade, Black Mass is still a must-see for the cinematic partnership of Johnny Depp, Joel Edgerton, and Benedict Cumberbatch.

'Black Mass' walks in a very entertaining way between the work of its director - the sensational sequences of violence - and its actors. [Full Review in Spanish]

It's an enthralling true story, and Depp's entire support cast, Edgerton in particular, are worthy of a ticket in themselves.

Depp chillingly embodies the unholy ruthlessness of the notorious Irish-American mobster.

Cooper directs with a very spare, matter-of-fact style that allows the characters' brutality to speak for themselves through their own nonchalance.

Although not a particularly original film Black Mass is as good as it can be given its constraints, holding the audience's attention throughout with lean editing and sterling performances.

Black Mass helps to remind audiences of Depp's talents, a dynamic performance as Whitey Bulger that is his best work in more than a decade.

It's difficult to pinpoint exactly what makes a good crime/gangster movie great. It's a combination of memorable characters, solid acting, and a thrilling narrative. Black Mass has some of these qualities, but never all of them at the same time

Shot in and around Boston, it has atmosphere to spare, and the flip side of the narrative choices is that the film moves along at a fast clip; it's never less than engaging.

It's a good movie, definitely worth the price of admission, but it could have been great.

Whitey Bulger is Depp's inner lion, roaring at any who dare challenge him, while cementing his position as blatantly and brashly as he can: He's not going anywhere.

An added bonus is Benedict Cumberbatch as Whitey's politician brother. Between them, and a story so wild it could have come from the pages of pulp fiction, Black Mass delivers on most counts.

This isn't quite a "return to form" for Depp, although it's refreshing not to see him swigging rum and quipping one-liners.

It can't engage on a level similar to the best mafia films, but Black Mass is a strong showcase for actors featuring some splendidly bloody murders

To watch Depp as Bulger is to watch a pit bull standing back as the lesser dogs fight over the scraps he provides.
