This transposition of Tomohiro Maekawa's novel is not bad, but it's light years away from the best works of its creator. [Full review in Spanish]

Kato manages to deliver a funny, thoughtful, sincere message.

An alien invasion B movie packed with A-grade ideas and craft.

Before We Vanish delights as much as it confuses - and, considering its slower pace and two-plus hour running time - occasionally bores.
March 8, 2018
In some ways, a distant and much less portentous cousin to 2016's Arrival.
October 3, 2017
Before We Vanish's beauty, its poignancy, comes from its relationship to Kiyoshi Kurosawa's other work.

Kiyoshi Kurosawa weaves a handful of stranger-in-a-strange-land tropes together in new and interesting ways in the darkly comic alien-invasion drama Before We Vanish.

Yes, it's the peculiarly heartwarming tale of a man who becomes a better partner thanks to an alien invasion, but it also has an enormous body count and a dimly optimistic view of humanity. Still, you won't see anything else quite like it this year.

Kurosawa delivers his signature chills, along with moments of unexpectedly strong emotion.

Kurosawa tackles some pretty big ideas about the human condition, again in his signature style of deliberate, understated precision.

The characters are flawed, thorny and affable, while sun-kissed settings and a John Williams-style score, by Yusuke Hayashi, alleviate the gloomy mood and doomsday notions.

It unleashes Kurosawa's more playful side-his comic instincts and a largely concealed flair for action-movie pyrotechnics, albeit of the budget variety.

Insanely fun and ambitious, but also quite melancholic.
February 2, 2018
An immensely satisfying and highly entertaining journey touching on multiple genres in search of a simple truth. Plus a machine gun-wielding schoolgirl.
September 26, 2017
Before We Vanish rejects pat happily-ever-after answers to its dramatic dilemmas. Instead, Kurosawa's alternately amusing, disquieting and moving film recognizes that, when something vital is gained, something else is often lost.
February 2, 2018
An unsettling, and sometimes high-concept doodle, but it's awfully hard to resist a film that marries Atomic Age paranoia and optimism with Kurosawa's signature post-modern, atmosphere-intensive style.

Ultimately, "Before We Vanish" serves as an inquiry into what constitutes humanity.
February 15, 2018
It's a quirky hybrid of a film that mostly works, thanks to some fine performances and by a script to goes in unexpected directions.

A lively and unnerving but silly cerebral sci-fi alien invasion film to ponder in its strangeness.

Mr. Kurosawa, a prolific and skilled genre master, spins this parable with a light, nimble touch, punctuating heavy passages of exposition with punchy, modest action sequences and snatches of incongruously bouncy music.
