Bresson slowly transmits that it is Balthazar's example of loyalty, sustenance and grace that is noble and permanent - not the transient agendas of the people around him.

I don't know if Au Hasard Balthazar is a masterpiece. I don't even know what it is exactly, aside from a rare and fascinating object. [Full Review in Spanish]

The movie plays like a concerto.

I think this is a superb movie for its original content, exhilarating editing and Bresson's Puritanistic camera work, belt-high and wonderfully toned, that creates a deep, damp, weathered quality of centuries-old provincialism.

If one were looking for a perfectly realized film, Au Hasard Balthazar would be as likely a candidate as any.

The lens of dispassion Bresson invites us to look through during Balthazar embodies "a prayer which slips into life without interrupting it."

Bresson is one of the saints of the cinema, and Au Hasard Balthazar is his most heartbreaking prayer.

One of the great masterpieces of world cinema: austere, warm, grim, surreal, shocking and heartbreaking.

A deft, impassioned, and wrenching film, but also - emphatically, absurdly - a film about a donkey. Indeed, it hardly pretends to be much more.

A strange and bittersweet triumph.

The film is perhaps the director's most perfectly realised, and certainly his most moving.

The most modern equivalent of [Balthazar's] final scene may be the ending of Lars von Trier's "Breaking the Waves."

[In Au hasard Balthazar] the suffering is tempered...with the sense of small relief for the quiet little donkey that captured my heart.

The supreme masterpiece by one of the greatest of 20th-century filmmakers.

It is a devastating picture, scored to a Schubert piano sonata and done with a purity and austerity that transfixes us.
