Critic Consensus: It has its moments, but Bachelorette ultimately plays it too safe with its trio of unlikable leads, betraying them with a predictably sentimental final act that undermines the bracingly honest humor preceding it.

Movie Info

On the night before an old friend's wedding, three frisky bridesmaids go searching for a little fun but find much more than they bargained for. With lovely Becky (Rebel Wilson) set to marry her handsome sweetheart, Dale (Hayes MacArthur), the remaining members of her high school clique reunite for one last bachelorette bacchanal in the Big Apple. Regan (Kirsten Dunst) is an overachieving, ueber-Maid of Honor who's secretly smarting over the fact that she's not the first to marry, while Gena (Lizzy Caplan) is a whip-smart sarcastic who's actually a closet romantic, and Katie (Isla Fisher) is a ditzy beauty who loves the good life. But when Becky insists on keeping the bachelorette party tame, the women proceed with an after-hours celebration of their own. -- (C) Official Site

Critic Reviews for Bachelorette

All Critics (101) | Top Critics (35)

Bachelorette is very much its own bitter brew, using the comic framework of a botched, coke-fuelled hen night to examine the stinging self-loathing exposed in three women by another's happiest day.

Retains that edge regularly removed from more commercially amenable comedies, and the cast make merry-ish ...

Not good.

It flips in and out of its tone too many times. Nevertheless it does have a sourness and a wretchedness that make some moments startlingly real and vivid.

It cuts to the quick with toxic glee, confronting us with a trio of the worst friends you could possibly want at your wedding.

The women's dialogue is pungently ribald but diffuse; too often, shouting and shrieking and gesticulating take the place of engaged performance.

This is probably what The Hangover would have been like had it been made with female characters: a raunchy version of Bridesmaids that is dirtier, more politically incorrect and funny as hell - gladly lacking that typical sentimentality found in most comedies today.

Kind of disappointing. I didn't hate it, but for a comedy, it was low on laughs. I think the only even vaguely likeable one out of the three girls was Isla Fisher, and actually she was pretty horrible too, but kind of dumb, so you could laugh at it. Kristen Dunst I have never before seen so harsh on screen. The third girl I didn't recognize as an actress and I didn't like her at all. Rebel Wilson is the only one you can really like here, but her screen time is less than the other three. Maybe I just expected better because of the cast. I will have to watch it again sometime with my lowered expectations. 27/3/15 Actually did appreciate this more on a second viewing. Realising it wasn't going to be a laugh a minute (though there certainly are some dark laughs to be had), I could better see these girls are actually quite troubled. I didn't find Isla's character funny this time, actually she's very sad. Funnily enough, I liked Kirsten more this time. A flawed, but decent study of the rivalries hidden behind friendships.

With such a stellar a cast, this film should have been fantastic. Except, that it was a very poor attempt to match the comedy of Bridesmaids...with only raunchier humor. The characters in this movie were unlikeable, unbelievable, annoying, and sad (as in sad attempt). The writing, and stupid dialogue, was even worse. Too bad....
