Critic Reviews for At Middleton
At Middleton is a bittersweet romantic comedy set in an exotic locale-a small liberal arts college campus.
Gives a hell of a first impression, but the deeper we delve into the screenplay, the more obvious it becomes that there's not much going on under the surface.
At Middleton is a modest movie with modest aims, but at times it feels like a small miracle.
Some truths about George and Edith's underlying emotional state come out in an unconventional and interesting way, but it's not enough to make us care about the attraction that is drawing them closer.
Garcia and Farmiga, as good as they can be in the right roles, aren't doing themselves or their careers any favors with this sort of C-level effort.
Audience Reviews for At Middleton
I am definitely a softie when it comes to films like this. I loved it! Vera Farmiga just radiates on screen. I loved the interplay between Edith and George and was heart broken at the ending. The cinematography was beautiful, and the plot, although formulaic and predictable, was in spite of that well thought out and entirely plausible. There was drama, most prominently when George and Edith are called on to participate in the drama class that they crashed, and plenty of care-free lighthearted moments. This is the second film that I've seen where Vera's younger sister, Taissa, plays her daughter and she is an actress to be watched. One wonders if her character will find a balance to her life or whether seeing her dreams crushed will cause her to crash and burn. I have to give it five stars!
Andy Garcia and Vera Farmiga's performances at the only reason to watch this film. The film could have been better. Andy and Vera have a great on screen chemistry. They need a better story than this one. It needed a major rewrite. It was predictable. I felt like I have seen this type of film done before, only better. It felt like, the screenwriter didn't know what to do with both character at some points in the movie. There are a few cute moments in the film. I thought Peter Riegert was good in his supporting role. Hopefully the next film Andy and Vera do together will be better than this one.
