A fine idea, best friends growing apart, but my goodness this is painfully dreary.

Booksmart and Lady Bird seem masterpieces in comparison. (The first nearly was one.)

Both leads give it their all, and if they hadn't been cramped by the script's stiffer moments, there might have been even more to enjoy in the film's frank and energetic portrait of two women baffled by the life choices they face.

The debauchery on screen sometimes feels like an overcompensation for a lack of authenticity.

Animals is the sort of film that's so desperate to be edgy it curdles into conventionality.

Grainger, typically, yet again, is heroic and delivers everything she can, including myriad expressive looks, some nice physical comedy and a pitch-perfect Dublin accent in an admirable attempt, ultimately fruitless, to breathe life into a corpse.

Something, alas, has happened to Unsworth's original vision; it's become slighter and more one-sided.

Why does the end result feel so inert and contrived, even if it's exceedingly pretty to look at?

Regardless of their gender, most people will see something of their current, or former, selves in Laura and Tyler - and the only thing left to decide is whether to party on or get off the ride.

Hyde's film really immerses you into the world of Laura and Tyler but not as an audience, but as a participant.
August 8, 2019
Hyde reminds us that it is not only the ability to choose that counts but the quality, diversity and liberating potential of the choices available, something which, even today, continues to leave so much to be desired.

Director Sophie Hyde's keen take on the clashing paradoxes of woman and sister-hood is tender, awkward, confronting and illuminating.

It's in its truthful depiction of chaotic reality that it proves highly effective and immensely satisfying.

Animals was one of the most enjoyable films of Sundance 2019 and it deserves to be a break-out hit. Spend some time with two relatable women wearing gorgeous clothes in the literary scene of a beautiful city - you won't regret it.

Non-judgemental, funny and utterly exhausting, Animals delves honestly into the physical and emotional messiness of female friendship, defying the frequent sanitation of how we think, act and feel.

Animals meanders its way through Laura's and Tyler's messy lives, leading to an understated ending. It may not be the neatest conclusion, but its depiction of reluctant maturity rings true.

The women are not punished by the world for living large, and the audience doesn't feel it has to worry about them. For this alone "Animals" is to be cherished.
October 2, 2019
A gorgeous, sometimes bitterly on the nose evocation of the choices women face when they want to grow up but can't stop having fun, Animals is a bold film in love with its two firebrand female leads.
July 29, 2019
Grainger is a revelation and Shawkat a rebel in this delightfully defiant celebration of women's imperfections.
Stick with them through the chaos and you'll be rewarded with an utterly electric tale of female friendship.
