And So It Goes (2014)

Critic Consensus: And So It Goes aims for comedy, but with two talented stars stuck in a half-hearted effort from a once-mighty filmmaker, it ends in unintentional tragedy.

Movie Info

There are a million reasons not to like realtor Oren Little (Michael Douglas), and that's just the way he likes it. Willfully obnoxious to anyone who might cross his path, he wants nothing more than to sell one last house and retire in peace and quiet -- until his estranged son suddenly drops off a granddaughter (Sterling Jerins) he never knew existed and turns his life upside-down. Clueless about how to care for a sweet, abandoned nine-year-old, he pawns her off on his determined and lovable neighbor Leah (Diane Keaton) and tries to resume his life uninterrupted. But little by little, Oren stubbornly learns to open his heart - to his family, to Leah, and to life itself - in this uplifting comedy from acclaimed director Rob Reiner. (c) Clarius

Douglas and Keaton do just as well with the romantic angle, mostly because he's so adept at dispelling any whiff of mawkishness. Oren's essential orneriness remains, no matter what, and the film turns out to be a lot of fun because of him.

And So It Goes may touch the frayed heartstrings of some older viewers, but it's pretty bad - the failed attempt to Heimlich a venerable movie genre.

Audience Reviews for And So It Goes

I like movies about growth, but it is hard to imagine a curmudgeon like Oren learning anything about life. But if you believe in fantasies, 'And So It Goes' is the movie for you.

Average. I watched it, and I found it okay to watch once, but definitely not something to re watch. Michael Douglas I have never been a fan of, and he's totally decrepit and kind of an ass here, so difficult to be cheering him on as a romantic hero. Diane Keaton is fine. She does seem to play the same character over and over, though. I didn't like a lot of the supporting characters. Those screaming little boys, honestly, I'm surprised it was the dog he shot at. The chain smoking old hag and the ex druggie son. I don't even get what that little plot was doing in the movie. The grand daughter was okay. I also didn't really buy that he was loaded, but he wanted to live in that tiny apartment with the screaming kids (ditto new baby - btw, the birth scene also did not belong and could have done without it. Seriously why?? The mother was barely a character and it added nothing to the story). and this after he "got" Diane. Ffs, use your money and buy a house! Hmmm... It was you can see, a few things annoyed me. An older audience might enjoy.

From director Rob Reiner comes the lighthearted, off-beat comedy And So It Goes. The story follows a curmudgeonly real estate agent named Oren Little who's forced to take in his estranged granddaughter when his son is sent to prison. Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton are fairly good, but it's newcomer Sterling Jerins who really shines and gives the film its heart. Additionally, Reiner does a nice job at creating some touching character moments. However, the plot's rather trite and clichéd; following the usual stereotypes of an old man reforming is ways. And So It Goes is a bit of fun, but overall it a formulaic film that plays it safe.
