Movie Info

A leader in the past revolutionary movement in Italy, just after Napoleon's victories, Marcello Mastroianni doesn't want revolution anymore--he just wants peace and quiet. Former revolutionists try to pull him back into the fray, but Mastroianni will fight to keep them away, even if peace costs him some of the things he holds most dear.

Allonsanfan is not a masterpiece, and doesn't pretend to be, but its intention and message deserved to be mentioned and encouraged. [Full Review in Spanish]

This wittily rumbustious, almost operatic film offers a stirring reminder of a time when European filmmakers regularly engaged with serious political ideas, without compromising their cinematic creativity.

Not as good as Padre Padrone or Night of the Shooting Star, but this early Taviani feature is elevated by the performance of Marcello Mastroianni.

Audience Reviews for Allonsanfan

Incredible score to begin with.Annihilating performance by the unique Mastroianni. Pitch-perfect representation of the tumultuous Italian division of 19th century.Ignoring the political and social results would be fatal.Taviani are orchestrating through Morricone's music an opera of neoclassicism and reach breaking point in their time of film-making streak.
