With what started out as a simple transaction, After the Wedding becomes a confusing melodrama and the need to drag out this complex love triangle almost nullifies any emotionality it creates.

This thing is a slog, a ponderous, self-important "prestige" drama whose overwrought histrionics never approach anything resembling actual human emotion.

Despite the best efforts of the two women charged with holding up the whole messy affair, this version of the film is boring and misguided at best, convoluted and manipulative at worst.

After the Wedding dives into sincere concerns and addresses some critical topics but it is unfortunately bloated and often bland.

Good drama, bland visuals; oh the delight of an English-language remake.

For a film punctuated with emotion... After the Wedding sadly doesn't provoke much within the viewer.

With perfectly, encapsulating performances from Julianne Moore, Michelle Williams and Billy Crudup, After the Wedding is a little sluggish and melodramatic in how the story is mapped out. Yet, the performances will keep you engaged regardless

I found every character to be insufferable, irritating and selfish and all their problems to be first world and difficult to have any empathy for

Quinn and Williams almost make "Wedding" worth seeing, but it's not enough to save a film that feels more like a second rate soap opera than a quality family drama.

Despite some wonderful acting, "After the Wedding" ends up just an indie version of what happens with most remakes, falling short of the original mark.

Williams and Moore's convincing acting as two strong women stands out in the sometimes shouty emotional sludge. where Bier's dogma-ish original seems traduced into a TV soap that's obsessed with the opulence of its surroundings.

Boasts serviceable performances by the ensemble, but suffers from an onslaught of creative restrictions by Freundlich as he delivers a note-for-note remake of the original.

Williams plays her emotions right under the surface but holds strong enough not to fall apart, whereas Moore is way over the top, who ultimately, betrays herself (and us) by overplaying her big scene and ending for me, right there.

At times I really enjoyed it, but when it all came down, I felt a little empty.

Approached as merely an exhibition of the brute force of acting talent, After the Wedding is a beautiful presentation. However, as a drama of the human condition, it falls flat.

A film that doesn't know which story it wants to tell.
August 30, 2019
Dripping with melodrama, After the Wedding doesn't quite work on any level, and the twists constantly make you realize that you are watching a movie.

The film diverts us away from its hint of a social message using a series of tired twists and turns that don't signify much of anything.

The film is full of big speeches and proclamations, and the clunky script and strained performances made it difficult to fully buy any of them.

Becomes a... succession of those emotional clips that the Academy uses to exhibit its Oscar nominees. [Full review in Spanish]
