Has enough arch élan, aspirational costumes, and irreverent soundtrack to provide some pleasure but ends up feeling surprisingly dull despite a premise that promises something more.

The humor diffuses the mysterious suspense plot from being taken seriously. Despite comedic acting, the clashing of tones left me uncertain about how I was intended to feel.

At times, the developments are imaginative, at other times, clichéd. It's this unevenness that keeps A Simple Favor from truly gripping the viewer or creating a properly thrilling episode.

Far-fetched and hokey, this forgettable film delivers a tangled suburban web of secrets, betrayals, and murder.

I could see this film was made with a purpose, but I am not quite sure what the exact purpose of it was. Far from a feel-good comedy, or a gripping thriller, A Simple Favour juggles too many genres and ends up dropping quite a few balls.

Satire is their aphrodisiac and they brought it to the wrong bedroom. Kinky and quirky can be fun, but that mix is tenuous at best.

Save your popcorn money unless you're in need of a giggle and into a whole new genre of thriller comedy.

Given the reckless number of twists and turns tossed into the plot, it's no surprise that A Simple Favor gets lost so deep in its maze that only bloodhounds can get it out.

Feig's attempt at making A Simple Favor an engaging mystery backfires as the numerous flashbacks make the plot convoluted and silly. You can also see the twist a mile away.

You can see what Paul Feig was reaching for; a cheeky, sexy mystery, the diet coke version of Gone Girl. But Feig has none of the visual panache of Fincher and whilst he is usually able to land the jokes, in this muddled narrative they fall flat.
September 24, 2018
A deeply confused movie that feels like a mash-up of Mean Girls and an episode of Law and Order.

Piles revelations upon twists upon double-crosses, but never comes up with anything truly surprising.

It's a lot of fun . . . until it becomes a mystery thriller so convoluted and tonally wacky, Angela Lansbury would have quit in a huff.

The script never manages to effectively solve the challenge posed by any literary adaptation. [Full review in Spanish]

Watching Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick trade barbs is entertaining, but Feig's first thriller suffers from an unconvincing plot and inconsistent tone.

The strength of this movie is also its biggest weakness: A Simple Favor boasts a heaping helping of self-awareness.

Director Paul Feig doesn't seem able to decide whether he's making a slightly outré crime comedy, a blithely twisted relationship thriller, a brightly lit horror melodrama, or maybe an arch meta-take on all three.

This is a movie that gets a lot of points for trying, but it never really gels and leaves you unsure if you should be laughing, gasping or crying at any given moment.

As the mystery begins to unravel, so does the film. A tone that was already wavering gets some serious wobbles, and by the end, all of its flaws are on display.
