What 3 Faces lacks is Kiarostami's subtlety in creating tension between fiction and documentary, acting and non-acting, and between his own role as mere observer and as the powerful director who shapes reality.

Iranian director Jafar Panahi was a protégé of the late Abbas Kiarostami... Kiarostami's ghost hangs all over Panahi's 3 Faces, but rarely does Panahi make anything new from it.

None of Panahi's usual wit or intelligence is missing, with the focus on outdated male attitudes and the restrictions they place on women in Iran proving to be as incisive as ever.

Shooting with a handheld camera that only enhances the sense of immediacy, Panahi utilizes long, unbroken takes to build up suspense and also to draw attention to absurdities.

3 Faces will compensate the more patient and conscientious viewer with a study of a reality as hard as unknown. [Full Review in Spanish]

A series of disputes where each side believes things to be rigid and binary. Panahi is skilled in showing the audience not only this tension, but the grey areas that the protagonists cannot see.
March 6, 2019
At times surreally funny, at others starkly grim, Three Faces is a fine, curious effort from Panahi - less a protest piece than it initially suggests...

3 Faces may be made up of long, beautiful pans and one strange side adventure after another, but its real subject is the misogyny the titular actresses face.

Whenever a Jafar Panahi film arrives, it feels like something of a minor miracle.

3 Faces may not crackle with the sense of urgency that its premise would suggest, but it is in the digging for answers that allows greater questions to blossom.

I highly recommend this film, it's a funny, sad, and ultimately joyous journey into a world that most Westerners will not understand.

It's an impressive integration between consumer technology and truly graceful directing.

It's so unobtrusively shot that it seems to be happening before your eyes. Implicit is the question, when does a film become a film?

3 Faces flirts with the fish out of water comedy of these two big city folks in the country (they literally speak different languages) but its observations are too incisive and sobering to produce many laughs.

Three Faces is a subtle and beautiful exploration of female relationships.

Panahi ... offers a profound meditation on art and its power to elevate the seeming mundane into sublime beauty

Through the experience of three actresses... the filmmaker reviews not only the film history of Iran, but also that of the country itself and the situation of women. [Full review in Spanish]

It's a distinctly Kiarostami-like setup, and the early sections, in which Panahi and Jafari interact with various villagers have a shambling, but generative quality.

[3 Faces] is a more meditative reflection on women's relationships to art, work, and labor under Iran's orthodox societal norms and beliefs.
December 6, 2018
With its leisurely long takes and sharply drawn script, 3 Faces is a meditative road movie and humanistic critique on gender and celebrity in Iranian culture.
