Critic Reviews for The Man Who Cheated Himself
Under Feist's watchful eye, the film takes the hard-boiled noir and turns it into visual poetry.
Within the limitations of this sort of tightly wound melodrama, it delivers an entertaining morsel sure to please fans of noir and postwar unease.
Audience Reviews for The Man Who Cheated Himself
This noir features Cobb as a veteran cop who tangles himself up in a murder case. It fails, interestingly enough, because the writer cannot provide a plausible explanation for Cobb's character breaking the law after convincingly setting him up as an upholder of it. One cannot submit to the fantasy of believing that "this schmuck thinks he can get away with it?!?" I spent the time waiting for Cobb's character to "get real", but it doesn't happen. Oh well.
Should have. Would have. Could have. A nice little Film Noir that should have been great if it would have had more Jane Wyatt, who was absolutely great in this picture, and could have unleashed Lee J. Cobb and his famous mercurial temper, but instead underplays his role.
