One of the more heartbreaking films I've ever seen. It started off slow, but things later get interesting. Outstanding performances from both Lana Turner and Keir Dullea. (First and only viewing - 2/8/2019)

The best courtroom movie ever made!

"Madame X" is certainly entertaining in that 1960s Hollywood melodrama sort of way which now comes across as over the top and manufactured. But when you get past any of its nostalgic charm the actual storyline is ridiculous in its nature and these days would be more at home in a TV movie.

Lana Turner is accused of murder when her lover, Ricardo Montalban, falls down a flight of stairs during a fight. The drama doesn't stop their because her attorney doesn't realized that he's actually her son! At another point, she also tries to fake her own death, if you didn't realize you were in one of producer Ross Hunter's lushly produced melodramas. What I found most interesting watching this film is comparing it to the Douglas Sirk directed Ross Hunter productions (i.e. "All that Heaven Allows," "Imitation fo Life," "There's Always Tomorrow," etc.), which gave me a much greater appreciation for what Sirk brought to his films. Sirks' films and "Madame X" are equally soapy of material, but Sirk's use of lighting, staging, and camera movement are so much better than what director David Lowell Rich does behind the camera here. Rich was primarily a TV director and the blandness of his direction is plainly on display with unoriginal montages, weak use of dramatic zooms, and most importantly a lack of any meaningful subtext. Sirks' film always had something to say, but "Madame X" seemed purely surface level. Overall, this is only worth watching for the lush production values and for the cast, which besides Turner and Montalban includes John Forsythe and Burgess Meredith.

Yet another retelling of the 19th century tale, richly directed with a strong cast.

lana turner gives a hell of a performance in "madame x", and while she's easily the best part of the film, there's still plenty more to appreciate here and enjoy. the end is very sad and makes the film very strong.

Um dos filmes preferidos da minha mãe. Gostei muito. A mulher (C) obrigada pela sogra a sumir da vida do marido e todos, exceto a "v (C)ia megera" pensam que ela morreu.

The quintessential of the marshmallow melodrama with a bit too-old Turner who gives everything she has for this role an even more! Sometimes so bad that it's good. I'm sure you'll cry your heart out during the overcharged trial that seems to never end. A pure gem, I should give it 5 stars! :)

A classic Hollywood studio based production, but also a strong role for Lana Turner towards the end of her career. she puts a lot into her tragic character which makes the film.

3: I took me a little while to realize this was Lana Turner. It is not her most riveting performance, but it is worthy of comparison with the work of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, who also eventually embraced their age. The problem was she only embraced her age in the second and third acts of the film, whereas in the first act she attempted to regain a bit of her youth. The film is superbly entertaining, as the best Hollywood genre pictures are. One is kept on the edge of their seat, despite the fact that they have more than an inkling of how the picture will turn out. I've seen many variations on this theme, but perhaps none so melodramatic. The court room scenes are a little ridiculous when it comes to form, but this could easily be forgiven by this viewer. Very solid entertainment.

What melodrama! This is the third version, it was filmed in 1929 and 1937 before this version. Lana Turner is at her suffering best. The story was, and is way over the top, but then again, it is part of the appeal of stories like this. Glossy production, and it's great to see Constance Bennett in one of her few roles at this time.
