Critic Reviews for Kickboxer

All Critics (10) | Top Critics (3)

Combine Karate Kid and Rocky with a bit more blood and gore, dull direction and a smattering of inept actors and you have Kickboxer.

This may not be the dumbest action picture of the year, but it's not for lack of trying.

Don't see it for psychological complexity, social comment, acting, plot or humour; go, if you must, just for kicks.

February 9, 2006 | Full Review…

The fight sequences are staged with such élan that it is easy to ignore the hackneyed script - Van Damme had a hand in that as well - and rather wooden performances.

Kickboxer deviates little from genre formula in its story of a peace-loving martial artist who is pushed too far and goes on a maniacal rampage in the last reel.

It is exactly what it looks like. That can be a good thing.

Audience Reviews for Kickboxer

One of Jean-Claude Van Damme's best films. It has some great kickboxing fights. Done in a type of Rocky style.

His second best martial arts fest, the same kinda story as 'Bloodsport' with the same kinda revenge subplot and the same kinda outcome, but its great fun. Watching JCVD get there through some excellent training scenes/tests whilst we learn of criminal activity behind the scenes in a typically classic 80's way is just sheer joy. The cast again is a good mix of west/east and if you look closely many are part of JCVD's stable of faces that are reused in a few of his old martial arts adventures. Of course its 100% predictable and virtually plays out in exactly the same way as 'Bloodsport'. The fights all look decent and realistic accept for the final showdown perhaps, some nice music accompanies and a great performance from Dennis Chan as 'Xiao'.
