Born Lauruska Skikne in Lithuania, actor Laurence Harvey was a popular leading man during the 1950s. As a child he emigrated to South Africa with his parents to escape persecution for their Jewish faith. At age 14 he lied about his age and enlisted in the South African navy; he was soon discovered and sent home. At 15 he debuted onstage with the Johannesburg Repertory Theater; later that year (1943) he joined the army and served until the end of World War II. He went to England in 1946 and enrolled at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, staying there three months before joining a Manchester repertory company where he soon began to play leads. He debuted onscreen in 1948 and soon became a busy performer in British films. Meanwhile he gained in stature on both the London and New York stage. A highlight of his theatrical career was his work in the title role of Henry V in the 1958-59 Old Vic tour of the U.S. Harvey's breakthrough screen role was as a ruthless social climber in Room At the Top (1958), which established him as a star and for which he received a Best Actor Oscar nomination. He went on to star in numerous top-budget Hollywood films and important British films. He married and divorced actress Margaret Leighton. Harvey died of cancer at 45.
