Was raised in Spain (his mother's native country) after his parents fled Chile in 1973, two weeks before socialist Augusto Pinochet's violent overthrow of President Salvador Allende. Learned to play guitar and piano as a young boy; composes the scores for many of his films. Created three award-winning shorts—The Head, Himenopterus and Luna (Moon)—before directing his first feature, the 1996 Spanish-language thriller Tesis (Thesis). Tesis won seven Goya Awards, the Spanish equivalent of the Oscars, including Best Film, Best New Director and Best Original Screenplay. His English-language directing debut, the 2001 thriller The Others, grossed nearly $100 million at the U.S. box office. His next film, 2004's Mar Adentro (The Sea Inside) won the Oscar for best foreign film. Made his Cannes Film Festival debut in 2009 with the historical drama Agora.
